National Day of Service!

What a day of service!!  The WCL JustUs League did a great job of arranging for people to come and help and getting donations for food and other supplies.  One donor backed out at the last minute for the boards needed so we were concerned, to say the least.

However, McCoys Building Supply came through for us big time!!  At 7:30 a.m. they were approached for help.  The manager, Holton, was so genuine with his willingness to help when told we needed 40 - 2"x4"x 10'.  Within 30 minutes the boards were loaded up and we took them to the garden.  Miracles!

Workers started showing up at 8:30 a.m. moving the 2nd  huge pile of compost delivered by Texas Organic.

Workers started staking the boards for forming the beds, and we realized we needed more than two hammers.  A quick phone call to Tractor Supply assured us we could come get what we needed!  Another miracle!  Six hammers among a lot of workers got the beds formed; others strung twine to mark off the beds; still others shoveled dirt or raked until each bed was level

When Terry wasn't working, he manned the grill and made sure everyone had food and drink.  Gatorade, water, otter pops, and comradery!  What a great mix!

About mid-way through the day, Janice Lewis and her son, Jacobie came to see exactly what was being done with the property she owns and offered for use for the garden.  She was very surprised and pleased to see all the work that was being done by so many individuals from the community.  Jacobie, who just graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with his Bachelors in Kinesiology Pre-med, was equally excited, and plans to return next Saturday when we get everything planted.  He said, "I'm coming back and I'm bring my friends with me."

This is the intent of the WCL Tyler Community Garden...to become a place of friendship, growth (in many ways), learning, and community togetherness.  We hope all will feel welcome at the garden!
